Soul Cinema

In addition to the lunch and learn series featuring Eyes on the Prize, the Bessie Smith Cultural Center will also host Soul Cinema every Friday evening from 7:30 pm - midnight throughout February. For just $10, moviegoers aged 21 years and older will have an opportunity to view a classic African American movie enjoy popcorn and relish the evening’s signature drink.
The movies scheduled to show at the Soul Cinema include:

Cadillac Records, starring Adrien Brody and Beyonce (2008)
Friday, February 12
Dream Girls, starring Jamie Foxx and Beyonce (2006)
Friday, February 19
Five Heart Beats, starring Robert Townsend and Michael Wright (1991)

Michael Jackson’s, This Is It (2009)
The party begins after the movie, as the Soul Cinema will be converted into a mainstream disco hall.

Kevin O'Keith - "A Love Supreme"

The love of art and love of jazz music performed by the legendary John Coltrane inspired, Chicago native and emerging artist, Kevin O’Keith to create his first solo exhibition, Love Supreme.
Love Supreme, titled after John Coltrane’s musical masterpiece, showcases more than thirty original sketches and giclee prints created by Kevin O’Keith. The exhibit will be unveiled at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center on November 20 and remain on display through February 20.

Kevin O’Keith featured artist at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center will be giving an artist talk on Thursday, February 4th at 6 pm in the Bessie Smith Cultural Center located at 200 E. Martin Luther King Boulevard.
O’Keith’s love of art and jazz music performed by the legendary John Coltrane inspired him to create his first solo exhibition, Love Supreme, which is showcased at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center through February 20.
The Artist Talk featuring Kevin O’Keith is free and open to the public. Guests attending this event will learn many things about this emerging artist, from how he started in the art field to what continues to inspire him today. Mule Train Exhibit and Martin Luther King Day of Service

The Bessie Smith Cultural Center encourages you to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr 2010 Day of Service on Monday, January 18th.
In honor of Dr. King's legacy the exhibit "Mule Train" will be on display January 16 - January 23rd in the Vilma Fields Atrium.
Dr. Martin Luther King devoted his life’s work to causes of equality and social justice. He taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome. Dr. King’s teachings can continue to guide us in addressing our nation’s most pressing needs---poverty, economic insecurity, job loss and education.
Volunteer with Americans across the nation on the 2010 King Day of Service and make a real difference in our community.

To support the collections of the Hunter Museum of American Art and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. This new group will support and enhance the permanent collections of both the Hunter Museum of American Art and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center.
This is our chance to cultivate a dynamic group of people to champion acquiring, collecting and learning about African American art and artists. We would like for you to be involved!

23rd Annual A Night To Remember starring Babyface

A Night to Remember will be held on March 19, 2010 at the Chattanooga Trade and Convention Center and will star Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds.
Since the mid-80's, A Night to Remember has raised more than $4 million for programs that benefit the youth of Chattanooga.
Ticket will be available at the Bessie Smith Cultural Center starting January 20, 2010. Pricing starts at $75.
